A kitteh with good taste. Namely, the kitteh belonging to Jen at Makeshift Bookmark. Oh, wait… the kitteh is sleeping. My book wasn’t that boring, was it? Hmmm.
On July 22, I had my official book launch for Other at Uppercase Books, and it was fab! I’ll let the photos speak for themselves:
Why, of course I had to pose beneath the sign.
And pose with the fab people of Uppercase Books!
The pretty display of Other copies.
Me, going “Hmmm…” during the Q&A. Avec la Pooka!
The audience, actually intrigued by my “Hmmm…”
Author Mindi Scott dropped by. Go Tenners!
So did book blogger Sarah and her sister Elizabeth!
For those who couldn’t make it out to Snohomish, WA for the Uppercase Books signing, never fear! I’ll be signing Other and schmoozing with readers in Olympia, WA (my college town!) at Orca Books on August 14, from noon to 3 pm. More info here. Hope to see you there!
A bell jingles when I push open the door. I inhale the familiar musty scent—I always think it smells like secrets, if they have a smell. Ranks of rainbow books crowd the shelves. A ginger cat lounges in a square of sunlight.
Maybe you’re curious to visit the inspiration for the used bookstore where Tavian works in Other. Well, now’s your chance to find out! On Thursday, July 22nd, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, visit Uppercase Books in my hometown of Snohomish, Washington for the official book launch for Other. I will be there signing copies, giving away bookmarks, and parading the Pooka toy. Hope to see you there!
Now that all my ALA photos are posted, here are my After ALA photos… first, obviously, I need to sort all my loot and cackle over my spoils. We wants more Bookses.
Since I’ve been visiting family after my return, my mom took the opportunity of Other‘s release to bake a pooka birthday cake. Yes, you read that right. A Pooka Birthday Cake.
My mom is made of awesome.
Me, photographing the event.
At last, my photos of ALA, Day 2! The continuing parade of author stars, as well as John Green’s mysterious tendency to materialize in most of my photos. Finally, a pooka for president photo shoot.
At the crack of dawn–okay, okay, it was nine in the morning–I dropped by the YA Coffee Klatch, for YA authors who had won one of ALA’s awards or had one of their books on the many ALA lists. An all-star cast, including Carrie Jones, Libba Bray, Andrea Cremer, etc. See if you can play Spot the Author and identify more faces.
I thought I had escaped the phenomenon of John Green sightings, but no…
Back in my favorite haunt at the conference, the Exhibit Hall…
…and I ran into John Green yet again, along with David Levithan. The two of them came to promote their co-authored book, Will Grayson, Will Grayson.
The Bloomsbury booth had a busy signing with authors Simone Elkeles, Jessica Day George, and Carrie Jones. Note John Green yet again, recording the whole thing on a camera. There was some joking around about John Green’s ability to divert crowds.
Bloomsbury signing, with a better look at the three authors.
Carrie Jones. I was so happy to finally meet her in person, especially after loving Need and getting a blurb for Other from Carrie. Now I possess a signed copy of Captivate, mwahaha!
Sara Crowe, my fantastic agent. We met for lunch after she dragged me out of yet another author’s signing. (looks guilty) I was only running a little late.
Danielle Joseph (my Flux book birthday twin) signing a copy of Indigo Blues for blogger Mitali.
Mitali again, this time with Steven Pomije, publicity manager at Flux.
Amy Brecount White (go Tenners!) signing Forget-Her-Nots.
Bloggers James (of Book Chic) and Skyanne. I ran into them almost as much as I ran into John Green. Seriously.
The Flux booth and my home base at ALA. Note my editor, Brian Farrey, wearing his fantastic “What the Flux?” T-shirt.
Pooka for President! Outside of Washington Monument.
My postcard shot of the White House. Even though I was footsore, hot and sticky, and book-drunk after ALA, I still had to visit our nation’s capitol.
I decided to collect all my interviews to date in one easy post, so that those with burning questions can more easily have them answered. If you still have a burning question… well, you can always ask!

Other just released yesterday, and you might be one of those people who’s wondering, “Who’s reading Other? And what do they think about it, so I can decide whether to bolt to the nearest bookstore or not?” (Note: it’s already shipping online. Not sure about bookstores yet.) Well, handily for you, I have a special page on my website called Reviews and Interviews, which lists some selections for you to check out. Such as:
“Karen Kincy has an absolutely awesome writing style. It’s descriptive and at sometimes, almost poetic.” – Mindful Musings
“Other has a strong storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat. You have mystery, paranormal, suspense, love. All things we want in our YA novels.” – Courtney Reads
And also some fabulous fan art by Sophistikatied Reviews:

Okay. Here’s one of those (insert squee here) moments. July 1 is the official release date for Other. That means today is my debut novel’s book birthday. Pooka cake for all!
Er, that’s not quite right…. how about these werewolf cupcakes?
Anyway… I know that copies of Other have already been released into the wild, though I have yet to visit any bookstores and libraries in an attempt to stalk them in their natural habitat. If you see feral copies of Other lurking in the jungles of bookshelves, don’t let them escape! Tame one and take it home. The pooka won’t bite, promise. Though the werepuppies may nibble your toes.

I’m currently flying back from D.C., and my plane has wifi, so I’ve decided to post about how I died and went to Book Heaven, i.e., the 2010 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference. I got to sign finished copies of my debut Other for the very first time on Saturday, and lots of fabulous librarians, teachers, bloggers, and other readers showed up in line!
While I wasn’t signing, I was running around, snatching ARCs (I mailed home 21 lbs. of books, and I’m carrying more on the plane!), and geeking out over authors like the fangirl I am. I am shameless, I swear. I randomly approached authors ranging from Libba Bray to John Green to Carrie Jones and waved my Other bookmarks in their faces, which they accepted with commendable grace. Okay, so maybe Carrie Jones saw it coming, since I’ve already fangirled her online.
If you didn’t go to ALA, you didn’t miss your chance to win one of four copies of Other over at Tynga’s Reviews and All Things Urban Fantasy. And here on my website, you can still win one of 10 signed bookmarks for Other, along with a unique teaser from Other or the sequel, Bloodborn. They are shiny. Maybe shinier than the ones that got all smudgy from my fingerprints at ALA, since it was sweltering in D.C. People from the other Washington (State), such as me, tend to shrivel like slugs in the sun.
Ahem. Anyway, I will be posting another post right after this one, with more photos of the fabulous people I ran into/fangirled over/waved bookmarks in their faces, including a big batch of Tenners!
